Unfortunately, I can't recommend this filter wheel, and I'm not sure I can recommend ToupTek either. After purchasing the ATR585M bundle that included the AFW-M 8x1.25", I quickly realized there was something causing internal light contamination. I was able to isolate the issue to the filter wheel. I tried the firmware update that reportedly fixes this issue, but it made no difference, as any slot other than slot 1 still showed the internal light contamination. After reaching out to ToupTek about the issue, they first said that the firmware update fixes the issue (even though I also stated that I had already run the firmware updater and it made no difference), then tried to blame me for not properly addressing external light leaks (even though I specified in the message I had already accounted for that).
In a thread on Cloudy Nights discussing the issue, it was discovered that several others had the same problem, with a few of them reaching out to ToupTek as well and receiving similar responses. ToupTek claimed they were unable to reproduce the problem, but then in another message said that they were aware of the issue with the AFW LEDs only turning off in position 1, but that fixing it wasn't a priority (and implied that bug fixes on the StellaVita were the priority).
This, to me, is an unacceptable response, as the filter wheel is unusable unless I want to only shoot with the filter in position 1, or if I unplug the wheel after every filter change.
There's also the occasional bug where the filter wheel doesn't show the position when you first connect it, or when you try to switch filters it just spins endlessly.
All in all, very unimpressed by the software/firmware implementation for this filter wheel, and very, very unimpressed by ToupTek's response to their faulty hardware.
I bought the filter wheel for my ToupTek IMX585 Mono and my ToupTek 36mm LRGBSHO filters.
It screws perfectly onto the camera and works without any issues.
Suggestions for improvement:
Include a cover for the holes on the telescope side.
The holes remain open if no OAG is used, allowing light to enter the system. There is a suitable 3D-printed part available, but having a proper cover included from the start would be a nice addition.
It would also be great if a short USB cable were included to connect the filter wheel to the camera without excessive cable clutter.
The long cable is unnecessary in this case and only causes issues.
Super pleased with this product, for the same price as a 5x1.25” EFW from ZWO you can get this! I would give it 5 stars however I think 4 stars is more appropriate because it doesn’t come with the brackets to hold 31mm unmounted filters, which is okay for me as I’m using 1.25” filters but for those with 31mm filters it is definitely a inconvenience not to have those come with the AFW
I got my wheel almost as scheduled, but that was due to my country customs. NINA recognized it right away. It came with an updated firmware that solves the LED light leakage. Movement is smooth, if not a bit noisy, but that doesn't bother me. The filters seem to center just fine in both uni or bidirectional settings (no backlash because of the friction drive). I did install a baader filter and it seems to fit just fine (I mention this because of a different comment on this page). The only downside I see with this filter wheel (and I understand why this choice was made) is that the connections are M54. Being a universal 1.25"/36/2" filter wheel, the frame must allow for the biggest filter option. I got the 1.25" version, so that hole seems extremely big. As a suggestion, it would be great if touptek could include a second M54 to T2/M48 adapter, but with a female T2 or M48 thread (since we already have a T2 to M48 adapter included. This could help if you're using a T2 camera/OAG combo (like a ZWO 183/294/533 or an SVbony camera. Also, some masks would be good for the screw holes. 5/5.
I wanted to like this product but I have been having issues. It randomly and unexpectedly starts to spin infinitely at NINA command to change filter. Like I mentioned, this behavior is random and I cannot narrow it down to a specific pattern. It works for a couple nights and then suddenly this happens. I tried with different USB cables as well as connecting directly to the camera hub or to the computer but the issue keeps happening in both cases so It must be the AFW itself. Needless to say how frustrating this is since I missed quite a few nights session because of this issue. I cannot use it any more and I cannot work with an unreliable product. I sent TOuptek an email for a solution either hardware wise or firmware wise. Otherwise refund/return option (perhaps I got a bad sample but I found forums where other people are having same issue).
